OVER THE RAINBOW AND BACK AGAIN
by Bryan Borland
I want to share my appreciation with so many of you who contributed to my wonderful experience in New York City and the Rainbow Book Fair.
Philip F. Clark, for handing me a dream (and his wonderful partner Parker – who delighted me with the best tiramisu I’ve ever tasted). Seth Ruggles Hiler, the talented artist whose portrait “Aaron” graces the cover of My Life as Adam, who surprised me with a visit and made fun of the amount of cream I take in my coffee. Beth Bloch, for morphing into my personal assistant (at least for grilled-cheese runs). Perry Brass, Daniel Kitchens, and Sarah Chinn, whose hard work organizing the Rainbow Book Fair certainly paid off. Joseph Harker, who endured my repetitive hugs, and Victor Kondratas, who graciously gave me the prize he won from the adult-themed TLA Releasing prize wheel. Elizabeth Stelling, who took photographs when I could not, and who schooled me on impromptu interviews and the importance of fruitcake at public events. My most passionate cheerleader and poetic angel, Annmarie Lockhart, who really is as nice as she seems, and her beautiful daughter, who may have convinced me to give green-tinted contact lenses a try (because her green contacts were glorious). Manny Beltran, who was an absolute pleasure to meet. My fellow writers, poets, and artists in attendance (Jamie Newinski, Mike Luongo, Alina Oswald, among many, many others), whose company I was proud to keep. Stephen S. Mills, who, even in his absence, helped me bring “The Hanky Code” back for at least a day in New York City. William Johnson, who I suspect will become a great friend. The kind-hearted Philip Clark, whose new anthology with David Groff, Persistent Voices: Poetry by Writers Lost to AIDS, has transformed writing for me in the 48 hours the book has been in my hands. And last but not least, the beautiful D’Elia family, who are the reason I write, and who made every mile of my trip worthwhile.
There will be more names added to this list, because the amount of love and positive energy I felt in New York City was unlimited. There will be book reviews highlighting my peers. There will be more pictures, too, but, for now, check out me and Annmarie… photo courtesy of Elizabeth Stelling:
Thanks Philip, for the poster!

Heck, I am adopting all of you! So nice you all were to this country girl in the city…

Dhyan, my next goal is to bring you to NYC!

We’ve got an extra bed!
I love hearing you read. It makes me feel like I get to understand the poems better. You gave’em ample reason to love you.
Thanks QL. Hope you are enjoying your copy of the book. So glad it arrived!
Bryan, I’m so damn proud of you I could pop. Your reading was brilliant and you were brimming with self confidence. Annmarie looked so pretty and I hope you’ve started a poetry photo album for a visual story of this trip you will be on for the rest of your life sweetie. I’m looking forward to seeing the other images from your trip and Oscar said he sees some of that big apple dangling from your lips.
You took a good bite but I’m sure you’ll be back to sink your teeth in again. HUGS and LOVE and oh shit this gave me a much needed smile today honeybee.
Don’t pop!
You were on my mind, Val, and with me in spirit (along with Oscar). You know, my flight was re-routed and I flew over Canada on my way home. Could you feel a shift in the wind?
Wow, fantastic and a great reading. I’m excited for you – the will be an experience of a lifetime.
It was a highlight of my life… and that’s no overstatement. Thanks for the comment, Gabrielle.
Bryan…I will admit that I am saving your book to read on the plane on my vacation to Tunisia…I ordered it so it would be here in time for my departure and as tempted as I am to start now after hearing you read your poems in NY…I shall wait..for yours is the only book I bought for the trip.
Wow slpmartin… the proper book to bring along on a trip is definitely a difficult choice! I usually load myself down with five or six, which makes my bags heavy and my arms sore the next day from lugging them around. Thanks again for your support! Have a safe trip!
You give a guy a dream, and what does he do? He makes his friends dream right along with him. You were wonderful and it was an incredibly exciting weekend. So great that we all shared it together. You’re a beautiful fellow traveler on this journey! And just think of how many people your poems touched in only one weekend.
I hope you and Parker could feel my sincere gratitude. The weekend was special, with more moments of friendship and magic ahead.
Bryan, you took the town by storm! You had the crowd eating from the palm of your hand. I was so happy there were no other poets at the table reading during your time slot because I would have felt bad for them for having been so upstaged. You were pitch perfect. I am still radiant with pride! So honored to have been there and heard you live. And to have met Liz, Joseph, and Victor. You are a rock star!
You’re the one creating the cool-poets’-club, Annmarie. The red carpet we walk on is your property. If I am a rock star, I’m a rock star because of people like you who graciously build and maintain the stage.
It’s all happening! And that makes me very happy. Am I on the official record as the first to call you what you are, Bryan? A Superstar!
Why yes, Paul, I believe you were the first. You have been instrumental in my confidence, and I thank you for that.
and now i see you added a video
sounds and looks
great
I’m apparently incoherent with glee Bryan,
I’ve backed over my comment three times…laughing…… I’m just producing rambling….mostly about how [based on the photo at Mary goes to the bookfair] I’d card you if you came into a bar and ordered alcohol….
I’m sooooooooooooooo glad that you had such a wonderful time and received such a warm response to your work.
Annmarie emailed me as soon as her feet hit the ground again….or got near enough to the ground anyway so she could hover in a chair and type. I’m green with envy that you guys got to be in the same room.
Hugs hugs and more hugs!!!! You, sir….. ROCK.
:0)
I DO GET CARDED!!! WHAT’S UP WITH THAT??!?! All I want is a lousy gin and tonic!

I have a high tolerance for hugs. No worries.
But fo real, it was awesome hearing you read, and congratulations once again (as always) for coming as far as you come. You had a serious fan club going at that fair! So when are you thinking about going pro?
