PILLOW BITER
by Bryan Borland
One of the perks of flying economy
is the proximity to pretty young things,
Seat 12B to my 12A, barely legal
to sit so close. If married men across America
can shut their eyes and make love to Miley Cyrus,
parachuting from the Tuesday-night boredom
of their wives’ spread-legged layovers,
if cougars can prowl the bush below,
tipping lawnboys extra dollars to mow shirtless,
pardon my altitude-induced daydreams
of this Icarus who flits and darts around my heart,
who brought his pillow as a carry-on, who hugs it
from takeoff until landing, emo in his earbuds,
his waxy-drool pooling on my well-placed sleeve.

This is great..But ya know, I’m not big on drool, call it fear of drying….
Hahahahaha
DV = Dry Visions? (to refer to Harry… ALMOST done I swear!!! I’m so ADHD with my reading! That’s why I’m a poet and not a novelist.)
I was waiting for someone to make this exact case (particularly with the cougar comparison), and you did so beautifully.
Roar.
NOTE TO PHILIP AND PARKER, who will probably read this. This poem has nothing to do with the 19 year old blond boy with the pillow who followed me off the plane on Friday.
Absolutely nothing.
Now here’s a line that we won’t here on the nightly news but should perhaps “parachuting from the Tuesday-night boredom of their wives’ spread-legged layover”…just brilliant..Bryan. By the way, you honor me with your comments on my blog…many thanks!
It’s easy to honor someone so good. The layout of your blog, it’s design – I’m jealous of it. What you’ve created with audio is impeccable, not to mention your voice. You’re building quite the following yourself. So let’s say we mutually honor each other.
wow…the tuesday night line was phenomenal…
It kinda makes me blush. :/
I’m innocent and virginal, you know.
One thing I, and I bet a lot of other people, have always respected most about your poetry Bryan, its flat-out courage and honesty.
Why stand in front of people at all if you can’t stand naked? That’s what I always say.
You’re every bit as courageous and honest in your writing as I am.
I hope it wasn’t my exchange student.
Oh God, me too.
wow,
those flights
and flights companions
are a magic place for getting lost within such little story, i am glad you are also there to record it.
it reminds of G. G. Marquez story from Strange Pilgrims called Sleeping Beauty and the Airplane – recommended
I’ll check it out Dhyan… spoken like someone whose experienced some high-altitude lovin’.
dude you are on fire with this one!
and ya know my reading period is open over at Referential for featured material? You know that right? I mean, right?
I am so bad about not submitting things lately! Bad Bryan! I need to get off my arse and get back on my WWJCD track!
don’t do everything she’d do-cause right now she wants cookies!
You make me blush sometimes when I read your work.
My hubby better have “better taste” than Miley!
I once sat next a redheaded man on the way back from…
Anyway-he said, “Two rednecks traveling will always find one another.”
Can you say love at first utterance? I didn’t even care that we were in the worst seats-the back two seats across from the yucky lavatory.
I hate those seats:(
To quote Alan Kaufman in his introduction to The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry, I want my poems “to inspire the kind of fever normally reserved for the Superbowl and hot sex.”
So if I made you blush… mission accomplished.

I believe I am a cougar now…

Happy Belated Easter!
[...] is PILLOW BITER – which has much bang for the buck and made me laugh. [...]
And I thought drool charming only when found on my last love’s pillow…
Hi Bryan!! My internet has been down for several days so here am I finally thanking you for the supreme sharing of your book of poems. I’ve chosen something for you. Watch your mail…
It was my pleasure, Patrice! I’m excited!!!!
Oh, such a treat to happen upon this! Made me grin with delight.
Thank you, Shanna! It’s an equally delicious treat that you stopped by and commented!
This is so like Paul Goodman’s poems. I enviously admire the way you put everything into your poems, holding nothing back. Your site is always refreshing!
Piero –
That’s quite the compliment! Paul Goodman, the man who said, “How well they flew together side by side/the Stars & Stripes my red & white & blue/& my Black Flag the sovereignty of no/man or law!” A fantastic writer! Please don’t be a stranger – you are welcome here.
